The Best Ways for Turning a Spare Room into a Home Office

If you have a spare bedroom inside of your apartment, consider turning that space into a work-from-home office!

Keeping your work life separated from your home life is important for maintaining a healthy work and life balance, but that can be difficult when you’re working from home. If you have a spare bedroom inside of your apartment, consider turning that space into a work-from-home office! Separating your work area from the rest of your apartment unit will allow you to fully relax when you’re at home and not working. You could even have some fun by placing a sign on the office door with “hours of operation” to remind yourself to stay away from there when you aren’t working. Read on to learn more!

Desk Setup

If you have been working from your couch, bed, or kitchen table or island, the first step towards turning the spare room into a dedicated work area is getting a table or desk to work on. This could be an expensive purchase, but keep these two things in mind: you’re making an investment, and you can thrift desks or similar tables. Set the desk in a perfect spot in the room. If you’re easily distracted by the outside world, then do not set the desk near a window or balcony. If you want some sitting space to take your work breaks at, set the desk at one end of your room to make more space for a loveseat or comfortable chair. This is a nice opportunity to get a desk that’s height-adjustable so you can figure out if you prefer standing or sitting while working.

Chairs in Your Home Office

Once you have your desk or table, you will have to get something to sit on while you’re working. Make sure the chair is comfortable and ergonomic if you can. You will be spending a lot of time on it, so make sure there is a solid balance between the style and the long-term comfort of this chair. If you find a chair in the same style that you’re looking for, but it does not offer excellent back support, you could always incorporate a lumbar support pillow or cushion.

Lamps in Your Home Office

Using lamps instead of overhead lighting will make the office feel more comfortable while also adding a good bit of décor. A desk lamp would be a nice addition if your desk area is close to an outlet, and a floor lamp might also be used to brighten the room. If you’re thinking about incorporating a sitting space, then a floor lamp would be an excellent addition to this space. If you want additional lighting without too many lamps, you can use string lights to brighten the room!
